Portrait of Michael Smith, Elder at Canterbury Presbyterian Church

Michael Smith

I came to faith in my twenties while living in Japan. I was baptised and discipled at Tokyo Musashino Evangelical Free Church (a large Japanese church with an outreach ministry to internationals in West Tokyo). I was deeply involved in the Tokyo church for almost 15 years before returning to Australia in 2005 with a Japanese wife and three children. We joined Canterbury Presbyterian for its warm welcoming fellowship, for its focused ministry to Japanese and Korean believers, and for its commitment to preaching and teaching the Word of God.

I have been an Elder for many years now and am currently serving as Session Clerk at both Canterbury and Malvern PC (as Assessor Elder). During the week I am the Library Administrator/Senior Librarian at the Presbyterian Theological College and also the Archivist of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. I believe that God has called me to help build up and support a strong Japanese congregation here in the city of Melbourne.

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
